A newly rescued White Faced Capuchin

Pierre’s Story…as much as we know…

Through the help of @upa.peruoficial and @serforperu , Pierre, a white-fronted capuchin monkey, arrived at @laisladelosmonosperu a few weeks ago.

He was a victim of animal trafficking – where animals are stolen from the rainforest and ripped away from their mother’s – likely destined to be sold as a pet. Other eventualities include being sold into biomedical research, as body parts for food, or traditional medicine.

Trafficked monkeys endure extreme trauma, malnutrition, and injuries, leaving many in poor health or dead.

It is illegal to keep monkeys as pets in Peru, but the animal trade remains a tragic reality. While cute as babies, monkeys grow into intelligent, strong, and social animals. They have complex needs including a specific diet, large territories, and constant interaction with their species to thrive – none of which a human home can provide.

Pierre was confiscated by the authorities and taken to Huanuco zoo for a week before being transported to La Isla de los Monos where he was introduced to two other Capuchins close to his age, Renzo and Sabrina. After time in a cage to acclimatise, the doors were opened, allowing him to explore his new environment during the day while having the safety of the cage at night.

At first, he was too scared to even leave the cage. But with love and patience, Pierre found the confidence to take his first steps into the outdoors 💚

Soon he was climbing trees and starting to forage, learning with the help of his monkey companions and human carers.

Thanks to @laisladelosmonosperu , Pierre has a second chance.
