Education Programme

Education

the heart of our mission

At La Isla de los Monos our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release monkeys affected by wildlife trafficking is all about education. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and empower individuals and communities to protect the environment.

Our Current Programmes

Educating our visitors

At La Isla de los Monos, every visit begins with an introductory talk about the island’s history, our mission, and the realities of animal trafficking. We explain how monkeys are rescued from the pet trade, biomedical research, and traditional practices, and share updates on their rehabilitation and release. Visitors also receive strict guidelines for interacting with the monkeys and learn about their species, behaviours, and habitats during the tour. Each visit is an opportunity to inspire conservation awareness and action.

Education outreach in local communities

It’s so important to help educate our visitors and the local communities about our monkeys, the illegal animal trade and conservation.
Wildlife conservation begins with awareness. Our outreach programs visit local communities, engaging with children and families to highlight the impact of animal trafficking and the urgent need to protect Peru’s rich biodiversity. By using presentations, storytelling, and visual aids, we make the issues relatable and actionable. These efforts inspire a new generation to value and protect the wildlife around them.

Education within our volunteer program

In our volunteer program, besides helping us take care of the centre and the monkeys, you can also cooperate by preparing talks about nature (and other important topics) for nearby communities. Recently some volunteers prepared an educational workshop for “Santa Victoria II zona” hamlet near the island.

If you’re planning on coming as a volunteer and want to raise awareness about nature-related or social topics, send us a message or email about it after you’ve secured your place as a volunteer.

School Visits

The island is not just a sanctuary for monkeys; it’s also a living classroom. We welcome school groups to visit La Isla de los Monos, providing students with an unforgettable educational experience. Guided tours of the sanctuary offer children the chance to see the monkeys up close, learn about their behaviours, and understand the devastating effects of wildlife trafficking. Our hands-on approach fosters a deeper connection to nature and a greater understanding of conservation efforts.

New in 2024/2025 - Virtual Education

Our education program at La Isla de los Monos extends beyond the Amazon, offering virtual visits and lessons that bring the sanctuary experience to classrooms and groups worldwide. Through live, interactive sessions, students and participants can connect with our team to learn about the vital work of rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing monkeys back into their natural habitats.

In one memorable session, students from Ms. Carter’s class engaged entirely in Spanish, speaking directly with our team about the challenges of animal trafficking and conservation. This unique opportunity allowed them to not only practice their language skills but also gain a deeper appreciation for global conservation efforts.

These virtual experiences provide a special chance to inspire curiosity and foster cross-cultural understanding, making conservation education accessible no matter where you are in the world.

In Ms. Carter’s class, students conversed entirely in Spanish with the La Isla de los Monos monkey rehabilitation sanctuary in the Peruvian Amazon. They learned about the important work to rescue, rehabilitate, and release monkeys back into their natural habitat.
A special experience for students to communicate across the globe! #ExpectMore

Education with our partners

Collaboration is key to amplifying our impact. We work closely with partners and other organisations dedicated to wildlife conservation. These partnerships facilitate knowledge-sharing, joint training sessions, and the development of innovative strategies to combat animal trafficking. By uniting efforts, we create a stronger network of support for wildlife in need.

Thanks to Zürcher Tierschutz and @latamairlines it was possible to be a part of the First Encounter or Amazonian Rescue Centers at #puertomaldonadoperu.

Staff Training

Education doesn’t stop with the community, it’s an ongoing process for our team as well. At La Isla de los Monos, we continually update our knowledge and skills to ensure the best possible care for the monkeys and the environment. Staff members participate in workshops, training sessions, and collaborations with experts to stay informed about the latest in wildlife rehabilitation and conservation techniques. This commitment to learning enables us to provide a safe, nurturing environment for the monkeys in our care.

At the island, we always try to update our knowledge and we’re constantly learn how to take better care of our monkeys and the environment. Thank you @gerforloreto_ for this training.
