Projects for 2025 and beyond

Help Us To create

A Better Future for All

We work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and release monkeys impacted by the illegal wildlife trade. But to continue providing the care they need, we need your help to fund projects.

With your help, we can give them the second chance they deserve. We’re fundraising for three critical projects that will make a huge difference – not just for the monkeys we care for today, but for every monkey who comes through our doors in the future.

Each donation brings us closer to creating a safer, more sustainable environment.

Project 1

a New Kitchen

The jungle is tough on everything we build, and our current kitchen is quite literally falling apart. We’ve managed to get the basic structure of a new kitchen in place, but there’s so much left to do and we need your support to finish it.

Thanks to your generosity, we’ve now raised enough to begin the next phase (February 2025). We’re currently laying the floor, sealing the structure and starting to paint!!

This will create the shell of the building, but to turn it into a fully functioning kitchen, we need to install essential equipment, including:

  • Sinks and taps
  • Storage areas
  • Work surfaces
  • Drain systems

We estimate that this step will cost approximately S/. 2,500

In addition, our current kitchen will be converted into a monkey prep and quarantine area once the new kitchen is up and running – until we have the funding to build our new vet centre.

Project 2

Establish a Veterinary Centre

Imagine arriving at a new home after enduring unimaginable trauma. Many of the monkeys we rescue come to us scared, sick, and in desperate need of care. That’s why building a veterinary centre is so important.

This brand-new facility will be a game-changer for the island. The veterinary centre will serve as a dedicated space for quarantine, medical care, and rehabilitation for monkeys in need.

This new space will allow us to provide a safe, quiet area for monkeys in quarantine, and also treat illnesses and injuries on-site with the right tools and supplies – giving all monkeys the best chance to heal and thrive.

Why it’s urgent

Many rescued monkeys arrive in poor health, requiring immediate attention. A fully equipped veterinary centre will enable us to provide the specialised care they deserve.

Equiping the centre

  • Four large cages.
  • A stainless steel table for medical procedures.
  • A small fridge for storing medicines.
  • Adequate supplies to provide critical care for monkeys, whether they’re newly arrived, ill, or recovering from injury.

It will provide a space entirely dedicated to the care of the animals that live here and separate from the activities that currently take place in our staff and volunteer accommodation.

Welcome Quarantine

The first weeks of any animal here at La Isla start with isolation in individual cages. Sometimes, this is because they are very young animals requiring a special diet, or because they exhibit skittish behaviour due to past mistreatment. This quarantine period is also important for observing any injuries or lesions in the newly arrived animals.

Vet Check-ups

Periodically, all the animals undergo veterinary check-ups in which the health statuses of all monkeys are verified. This ensures the well-being of each individual, as well as preventing epidemics that can affect the entire group. The health of our animals is our priority.

Special Follow-up

Animals that arrive as newborns or have any special health conditions are captured and placed in isolated cages. This minimises the transmission of any diseases or viruses among them and aids in monitoring and tracking the health status of each individual.

Solar capacity currently at la isla de los monos

Project 3

Expand Our Solar Capacity

The Amazon sun shines brightly, but our current solar setup doesn’t capture enough to fully power the sanctuary. Right now, we rely on a generator to top up our panels and batteries – this is a noisy, costly solution which uses expensive gasoline and adds to our costs.

With increased solar capacity, we can:

  • Save money on energy costs, redirecting funds to monkey care.
  • Operate the sanctuary more sustainably, in harmony with the environment and without the noise!
  • Reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

Why it matters

The less we spend on fuel, the more we can spend on rescuing and rehabilitating monkeys.
