Returning to La Isla de los Monos: A Journey of Love, Growth, and Hope

Returning to La Isla de los Monos for the second time was an even deeper and more emotional experience than I could have ever imagined. From the moment I arrived, I was overwhelmed by a sense of familiarity and love as I reunited with everyone. Seeing how the monkeys had grown filled my heart with immense joy. Each of them has a story to tell—one that connects me to the very purpose of this project—and every second spent with them leaves an unforgettable mark on my soul. My desire to help this beautiful sanctuary and continue being part of its journey grows stronger with each visit.

During my stay, which lasted nearly a month, I had the privilege of becoming even more involved in the monkeys’ care. It was an honour to administer the treatments prescribed by the veterinarian to those who were ill, witnessing their progress and knowing that, with each small step, I was helping them regain their health. Every grateful look, every gesture of trust they offered me, was deeply rewarding.

Another important task was working alongside the incredible island team to enrich the monkeys’ enclosures. Creating spaces that encouraged their curiosity, allowing them to climb more and spend less time on the ground, made me feel like I was helping them live a more dignified and fulfilling life. Designing those spaces and seeing how they explored them reminded me of how far we have come together to provide these animals with the care and environment they deserve.

One of the most emotional moments of this visit was witnessing Killa, a young black-headed night monkey around one year old, climbing in the new enclosure we had prepared for her. It was such a special moment because Killa had been afraid to climb trees, but watching her face her fears and take each step with courage was a powerful reminder of hope and perseverance. Seeing her climb in her new home reassured me that soon, she would do the same in her natural habitat, where she could be free and feel safe.

Watching the baby monkeys gain confidence and interact with the juveniles was another heartwarming experience that will stay with me forever. It is a testament to how this project not only saves lives but also allows each animal to find its place in the world. These small victories, these moments of growth, fill me with gratitude and emotion.

Every conversation with the island team was an opportunity to learn more, to share more, and to better understand the passion and dedication that each of them pours into this cause. Speaking with the new volunteers—those arriving for the first time, eager to help and learn—was a reminder of the beauty of being united in such a meaningful mission.

Returning to the island reaffirmed why this place is so special to me. It is not just a refuge for the monkeys; it is also a sanctuary for the souls of all who are fortunate enough to visit this paradise. In this place, filled with life and hope, I felt at home. I leave with my heart full of gratitude, knowing that every second spent there has left a profound mark on my life, and with an even stronger desire to return and continue supporting this incredible project.

Thank you to everyone at La Isla de los Monos for once again opening your doors to me, allowing me to be a “vet monkey” for almost a month, and for always making me feel like part of this family. My soul remains there, with the monkeys and with the love that fills every corner of this island—a place that has truly become a home for all of us.
